Tinnitus in Hamilton Township, NJ

Board-certified New Jersey otolaryngologist Dr. Scott Kay, FACS, treats tinnitus for the residents of Hamilton Township, NJ.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is ringing in the ears. It often develops as a symptom of another medical condition, an ear injury or hearing loss. Many people in Hamilton Township suffer from recurring tinnitus.

What Causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is caused by a variety of medical conditions. It can be a symptom of aging or a side effect of prescription medications. Meniere’s disease, which affects fluids in the inner ear, can cause tinnitus, as can an abnormal bone growth in the inner ear, called otosclerosis.

Other possible causes of tinnitus are:

  • Loud noises
  • Tumor
  • Blood vessel defects
  • Neurological diseases
  • Ear injury

Why Should You Seek Treatment?

While temporary tinnitus is a mild irritant, ongoing tinnitus can negatively impact the quality of one’s life. Depression risk is increased for individuals who suffer from chronic tinnitus, and they also often experience difficulty sleeping. Additionally, ringing in the ears may make it difficult for people to distinguish other sounds and can have a substantial impact on hearing. Eliminating tinnitus reduces these complications.

What Is the Treatment?

Tinnitus can be treated in many different ways. The most effective treatment for any case depends on the original source of the tinnitus. Surgery to remove tumors has been demonstrated to relieve tinnitus, as has the removal of excess earwax, and the use of devices to mask ringing. Hearing aids and changes in prescription medications have also been shown to help.
