What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis actually refers to inflammation of the mucous cavities that line the nasal cavity. There are two forms of sinusitis: acute and chronic. Acute sinusitis is relatively mild, and typically lasts less than four weeks. Chronic sinusitis lasts longer — even months or years in some cases. The only difference between chronic and acute sinusitis is the duration of symptoms, as both are characterized by congestion, pressure in the sinus cavities and mucous.
What Causes Sinusitis?
The most common causes are allergies and the common cold. Nasal polyps, which are small growths that occur inside the nose, are sometimes responsible for chronic sinusitis.
