Sinus Surgery in Princeton and Monroe, NJ
Chronic sinusitis causes a multitude of symptoms for patients, but sinus surgery may be the right solution to put an end to them. Board-certified New Jersey otolaryngologist Dr. Scott Kay performs sinus surgery for patients in the Central New Jersey area at Princeton Otolaryngology Associates.
What is Sinus Surgery?
Sinus surgery is performed to improve the function of drainage paths of the sinuses. It is used for patients who experience chronic sinusitis when medical treatments have not helped.
Benefits of Sinus Surgery
Sinus surgery offers many benefits for patients who have endlessly suffered the symptoms of reoccurring sinusitis, including:
- Eliminates blockages
- Relieves sinus pressure
- Improves breathing
- Restores taste and smell
How is Sinus Surgery Performed?
During sinus surgery, you’ll be put under general anesthesia. Using an endoscope inserted through the nostrils, Dr. Kay will explore your sinus cavity to find the location of your obstruction. A number of conditions can block the sinus passages, including polyps and scar tissue. Once identified, the blockage will be removed.
By removing the obstruction, the passageway will be enlarged, promoting effective drainage and resolving a number of other symptoms. This surgery does not require cutting, so recovery time is much less than other more invasive sinus surgeries.
Preparing For Sinus Surgery
Oral steroids or antibiotics may be prescribed before surgery; make sure to take the medication as directed. We will also review your current medication list and inform you if you must discontinue use of any before surgery. We recommend patients stop smoking before surgery, as it can impair the healing process.
Sinus Surgery Recovery
Bleeding is to be expected for up to five days following surgery. Pressure and discomfort are also normal during recovery. Do not blow your nose or lift objects over 20 pounds for 10 days following the procedure. You should refrain from taking blood thinning medications and nasal steroid sprays for the two weeks following surgery. You will have follow-up appointments with Dr. Kay to check the progress of healing.
How Much Does Sinus Surgery Cost?
Your sinus surgery may be covered by your insurance plan. We also offer CareCredit® to help you cover any out of pocket expenses. If you have questions about financing for your procedure, please give us a call.
Is Sinus Surgery Right For Me?
If you suffer from chronic sinusitis and have exhausted medical treatment options, surgery may be able to put a stop to your symptoms. Patients experiencing blockages and polyps in the nose may also benefit from sinus surgery.
