PROPEL™ Sinus Implants in Princeton and Monroe, NJ
Chronic sinusitis is one of the most common health conditions in America, affecting one in seven adults each year. The sinuses are hollow cavities located inside the facial bones around the eyes and nose which allow for air and nasal fluid to pass through. Chronic sinusitis is the condition in which the linings of the sinus cavities become inflamed, thus preventing proper drainage of the sinus passages, resulting in chronic infection and nasal congestion. At Princeton Otolaryngology Associates, New Jersey-based, board-certified otolaryngologist Dr. Scott Kay now offers the PROPEL™ dissolvable sinus implant to improve surgical results for those patients suffering from chronic sinusitis in the Central New Jersey area, including those throughout Princeton and Plainsboro.
PROPEL™ – Sinus Implant for Chronic Sinusitis
PROPEL™ is the first product of its kind delivering localized, controlled medication directly to the lining of the sinus cavity. The PROPEL™ system has been clinically proven to aid in the prevention of nasal sinus blockage after sinus surgery. It is a spring-like implant used to prop open the ethmoid sinus, delivering a steady dose of anti-inflammatory corticosteroid directly to the sinus cavity lining as the implant dissolves. Sinus blockage can occur post-surgery due to inflammation and scarring. The use of PROPEL™ during surgery reduces the likelihood of needing additional surgery or the use of systemic steroids and helps to ensure the procedure’s results.
Those who suffer from chronic sinusitis often experience the following:
- Pain or pressure in the cheeks, above the eyes, or other facial areas.
- Stuffiness and trouble breathing properly.
- Yellow or green nasal discharge
- Temporary loss of senses (taste and smell).
- Sinus headaches
- Symptoms of depression
How Does the PROPEL™ Sinus Implant Work?
PROPEL™ is a self-dissolving, spring-like device that was designed to prop open the walls of the sinuses, post-surgery, in order to help maintain the desired results. Once it is expanded, PROPEL™ delivers a steady flow of mometasone furoate, a corticosteroid that helps to inhibit swelling of the sinus cavity’s lining.
As the corticosteroid works to fight inflammation, PROPEL™ also helps maintain the surgical enlargement of the sinus while minimizing scar tissue development. Because PROPEL™ is self-dissolving, there is no need to have it removed or replaced. Dr. Kay, who is always on top of the latest technology in facial surgery, is one of just a few surgeons located in New Jersey who provide the PROPEL™ sinus implant. Board-certified in otolaryngology with a specialization in facial plastic surgery, he cannot only help you breathe easier and feel better but can also address and correct any other aspects of your facial appearance that you may be self-conscious about.
Is PROPEL™ Right for Me?
The PROPEL™ sinus implant is suitable for most individuals suffering from nasal polyps or chronic sinusitis, as well as those individuals who may be experiencing poor results from prior sinus surgeries.
Post-surgical care may include taking oral antibiotics and pain medication as needed, as well as nasal irrigation. It is suggested that you complete all medication for best results.
In addition, some bleeding, nasal drainage, discomfort, and headaches can be expected during recovery. It is recommended that you sleep with your head elevated 30 degrees to help ease bleeding and inflammation. It is recommended that you do not blow your nose, exert yourself physically, lift anything heavy, or bend over for one to two weeks post-surgery. If you feel that you need to cough or sneeze, do so with your mouth open and do not pinch or squeeze the nose.
Additional Benefits for Sinusitis Sufferers
In addition to promoting healing, the PROPEL™ implant helps to minimize or completely erase any need for additional oral corticosteroid medications. Corticosteroid pills have been found to be associated with certain health risks, especially in those individuals already taking prescription medications and for whom a drug interaction is a potential risk. One of the greatest advantages of the PROPEL™ device is its ability to provide anti-inflammatory drugs directly to the sinus cavity’s lining. Because inflammation is kept to a minimum following sinus surgery, discomfort, congestion, and scarring are minimized as well.
How Much Do PROPEL™ Sinus Implants Cost?
During your consultation with Dr. Kay, your cost and amount of available insurance benefits will be discussed. If needed, we will also advise you as to other payment options such as cash, personal checks, major credit cards and CareCredit® financing.
