Parotid Surgery in Plainsboro and Monroe, NJ

The largest of your salivary glands, the parotid can be affected by cancer or infection, requiring removal. Board certified New Jersey otolaryngologist Dr. Scott Kay performs parotid surgeries for patients in Monroe, Plainsboro and throughout the Central New Jersey area at Princeton Otolaryngology Associates.

What Is Parotid Surgery?

Parotid surgery, also known as parotidectomy, is performed to remove all or part of the parotid glands, which are located in the cheek area on either side of the face, in front of the ears extending to the lower jaw. The procedure may be necessary to remove a tumor or to prevent swelling and reoccurring infections. Depending on the severity of the affected gland, only the superficial lobe, which is about 25% of the gland, may need to be removed, or the entire gland may need removal along with any affected tissue and facial nerve.

Benefits of Parotid Surgery

Parotid surgery eliminates the symptoms of tumors and infection in the parotid glands. Benefits of this procedure include:

  • Restores facial function affected by parotid gland issues
  • Removes tumors in the gland to prevent them from spreading to surrounding tissues

How is Parotid Surgery Performed?

Parotid surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts three to five hours. In order to confirm your diagnosis as well as the severity of the problem, first a fine needle aspiration and an MRI are performed. A small S-shaped incision is made in front of the ear, extending from the earlobe to the upper neck. Depending on the severity of your parotid issues, the superficial gland is removed, or the entire parotid gland as well as affected nerve and portion of the facial nerve. The wound is sutured, and a drain is placed behind the ear to allow any fluids to drain during the healing process.

Preparing For Parotid Surgery

You will receive instructions from Dr. Kay regarding how to prepare for your parotid surgery. Because you’ll be under general anesthesia, you will not be allowed to eat or drink for a period of time before the procedure. You’ll be informed of when you should stop taking medicines such as aspirin, which can increase bleeding risk during surgery.

Parotid Surgery Recovery

Your surgical drain will be removed approximately three days after your procedure. Sutures may be removed after a week. You won’t have any food or drink restrictions, but you should not perform exercise or heavy lifting for about two weeks after the surgery.

How Much Does Parotid Surgery Cost?

The cost of parotid surgery depends on a number of factors, including your insurance benefits. We accept most insurance, as well as CareCredit®, to cover the cost of your surgery. Feel free to contact us to discuss your financing options.
