How is Otoplasty Performed?

Otoplasty only requires a local anesthetic and are typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Surgery lasts one to two hours. If the patient is a child, heavier sedation may be used to limit movement during surgery.

While all cases are different and will have unique needs, the basics of otoplasty are similar for all patients. An incision is made at the base of the earlobe, where it connects to the head. For otoplasty that is conducted to reduce ear size, the incision is made inside the ear rim at the front of the ear to hide the scar.

Dr. Kay may remove excess skin and cartilage if necessary. Depending on your treatment, the ears may be pinned using a permanent suture. Sutures may be used to allow portions of the ear to join together in order to create the desired shape. Sutures are strategically placed in order to reform the ear as it heals.

Preparing For Otoplasty

We will review your medication list and advise if any medications need to be discontinued before surgery. You should also stop smoking before your otoplasty, as it can impair healing. Arrange for a ride to and from the surgery.

Otoplasty Recovery

After otoplasty, you’ll need about a week to recover. Keep your head elevated and cool, and don’t sleep laying on your ears. Avoid heavy physical activity and activities where the ears could be hit, such as some sports.

How Much Does Otoplasty Cost?

Otoplasty is usually considered an elective surgery by insurance companies, meaning you likely don’t have benefits to cover the cost. We offer CareCredit® financing to help you cover out of pocket costs. For more information about financial options, give us a call.

Is Otoplasty Right For Me?

Ear surgery is an ideal solution for patients who have been embarrassed by the appearance of their ears. They may have been bullied over their look, or try to hide the ears with hats and covering hairstyles.
