What is Lymph Node Surgery?

Lymph node surgery, also known as a neck dissection, involves removing lymph nodes in the neck and head which are affected by cancer. It is performed to prevent the spread of cancer, preventing it from using the lymph nodes to reach other organs.

Benefits of Lymph Node Surgery

The primary benefit of lymph node surgery is to prevent the spread of cancer. It is performed to remove cancerous tumors which have developed in the lymphatic system. Lymph node surgery may be utilized in conjunction with other cancer treatments.

How is Lymph Node Surgery Performed?

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Through an incision in the neck, groups of lymph nodes are removed depending on what is determined necessary for the treatment of your cancer. A pathologist will inspect removed lymph nodes under a microscope to assess the spread of cancer. Drains are placed to prevent fluids and blood from accumulating.

You’ll also receive instructions as to when you’ll need to stop eating or drinking before surgery. We advise all patients to quit smoking before the procedure, as it can impair healing.

Lymph Node Surgery Recovery

Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may need to stay in the hospital for several days. Drains will be removed, and if you are healing well, you will be discharged. You’ll have a follow-up appointment to evaluate your healing and determine if further treatment is necessary.
