Excisions in Princeton and Monroe, NJ
To remove troublesome masses, tumors, and other lesions of the ears, nose, and throat, excision is sometimes the recommended course of treatment. Board-certified New Jersey otolaryngologist Dr. Scott Kay performs excisions for patients in the Central New Jersey area, including those in Princeton, Monroe and Plainsboro, at Princeton Otolaryngology Associates.
What is an Excision?
An excision is the surgical removal of a mass by cutting it out completely. The procedure can be used to remove benign or malignant tumors, abscesses, and other growths that are causing pain, secondary medical issues, and other problems.
Benefits of Excision
Excision can remove problematic masses at the early stages, preventing them from causing secondary issues or spreading. If a mass is causing a patient pain or disfigurement, excision can resolve these issues.
How are Excisions Performed?
Local anesthesia is most commonly used when performing excisions. Dr. Kay will then make strategic incisions in order to remove the mass or lesion completely while minimizing scarring. Your wound will be sutured closed after the excision is completed.
Preparing For Excision
You’ll need to stop taking any medicines which can increase the risk of bleeding at least two weeks before surgery. It is recommended that you quit smoking before the procedure, as it can disrupt the healing process.
Excision Recovery
Expect to experience some redness or swelling at the wound site after surgery. Do not wash the wound or get it wet for 48 hours after surgery. Avoid scrubbing the wound as you wash for about a week; simply allow soap and water to run over the area and pat it dry.
How Much Do Excisions Cost?
The cost of excisions depends on the extent of treatment necessary. Most insurance plans offer coverage for this type of surgical care. If you incur out of pocket expenses, we offer CareCredit® financing to assist you in covering this cost. For information about determining your benefits or financing, please contact us.
Is an Excision Right For Me?
If you are affected by a problematic mass that is causing pain or is causing additional medical issues, excision may be right for you. During your consultation, Dr. Kay will determine if excision is the appropriate course of treatment for you.
