Ear Infections in Princeton and Monroe, NJ

Children and adults alike may suffer from ear infections, which can cause extreme discomfort and even hearing loss. The Central New Jersey area residents, including those in Princeton, Monroe and Plainsboro, can have ear infections treated promptly by visiting the office of board-certified otolaryngologist Dr. Scott Kay, FACS.

What are Ear Infections?

An ear infection involves fluid trapped in the middle ear due to an infection or allergy (otitis media), or an inflammation of the outer ear tissues (otitis externa).

What Causes Ear Infections?

An ear infection usually results from another condition such as a cold, allergy flare-up, or the flu that also causes swelling and congestion of the nasal passages.

Benefits of Ear Infection Treatment

Ear infections can cause extreme discomfort and may even affect hearing. Treating them will eliminate discomfort and prevent permanent hearing loss due to a ruptured eardrum.

How are Ear Infections Treated?

Normally, ear infections are treated with medication such as acetaminophen to relieve discomfort and swelling. Topical ointment may also be used to treat otitis externa. Antibiotics may or may not be prescribed, depending on whether the infection is caused by bacteria or a virus. This is often difficult to tell simply by looking in the ears, which is why Dr. Kay will also consider any other symptoms you are experiencing to make a diagnosis.

Chronic or repeated otitis media could require the insertion of tubes to help with drainage. This is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting.

Preparing for Ear Infection Treatment

Write down where and when your symptoms started and a list of other side effects you are experiencing such as sore throat or dizziness. Gather any medications you are taking, including over-the-counter ones, and bring them with you to your appointment.

Ear Infection Treatment Recovery

Most ear infections are resolved in a few days. If you are prescribed medication, be sure to take all of it, even if your symptoms subside.

After having tubes placed, you will spend a couple of hours in the recovery room before being released. You must also avoid getting water in your ears until your tubes fall out, which normally happens around six months after placement. Wear ear plugs when swimming or bathing to keep your inner ears dry.

How Much Does Ear Infection Treatment Cost?

Moderate ear infections that require only medication are inexpensive to treat, while chronic ones that result in having tubes inserted cost more. Your cost will be discussed during your consultation, including payment options such as CareCredit® financing, major credit cards, cash and personal checks. We also accept most health insurance plans, and will work with you and your provider to determine what benefits are available.

Is Ear Infection Treatment Right for Me?

Ear infections should always be treated to prevent hearing damage.

What to Expect During Your Consultation for an Ear Infection

Dr. Kay will examine the eardrum with an otoscope, which allows him to view the middle ear. A tympanometry test that involves using air pressure to check for fluid may be performed as well. Dr. Kay will also:

  • Examine your throat, mouth, and nose
  • Take vital signs
  • Review your symptoms
  • Check for the possibility that your condition is a side effect of medication

If needed, medication will be prescribed, and then you will be given a follow-up appointment to ensure you are on your way to recovery.
