What is Audiology?

Audiology is the science of hearing. In the medical profession, it refers to the prevention, identification, evaluation and treatment of hearing and balance disorders. This is accomplished through a variety of procedures that may include testing for hearing and balance disorders, testing for central auditory processing disorders, electrophysiological testing, balance therapy and aural rehabilitation. Audiology also involves the prescribing and fitting of hearing aids.

What is an Audiologist?

An audiologist is a professional who evaluates hearing health and diagnoses hearing disorders. He or she has a degree in the field from an accredited organization. This may be a Doctorate in Audiology or a Master’s or Doctoral degree from a graduate program in the discipline. They may also hold additional certifications in the specialty and undergo continuing education throughout their practice years to keep abreast on the latest in advancements in the field. They work in both hospital and private practice settings. They treat both pediatric and adult populations from birth through the geriatric years.

Why Should I see an Audiologist?

An audiologist should be sought if there are any issues with hearing or balance. Treatments may include hearing aids, balance therapy, and aural rehabilitation. They are also consulted for wellness and preventative care such as hearing checks.
